Jeffrey Wilson, RN
I would like to commend Jeff Wilson for his exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to Veteran-centered care. Recently, Jeff demonstrated extraordinary commitment to patient safety when he notified a provider that a Veteran receiving treatments for severe depression had not been seen for over two months. Jeff informed the provider and expressed concern that the Veteran’s symptoms appeared to be worsening.
Recognizing the significant risk associated with an interruption in treatment, Jeff took immediate action to ensure that this Veteran did not “fall through the cracks.” Jeff promptly collaborated with the referring clinician to gather updated information and verify whether the Veteran had successfully engaged with community services. His clear communication, proactive coordination, and ability to bridge information across disciplines ensured that the care team had an accurate understanding of the Veteran’s status.
Most importantly, Jeff personally reached out to the Veteran. He took the time to engage in a meaningful, empathetic conversation, during which he uncovered a critical piece of information: the Veteran had essentially been attempting to discontinue treatment, under the belief that it was not helping. Jeff listened carefully, validated his concerns, and helped him explore the impact of stopping treatment. Because of his skillful guidance and supportive presence, the Veteran agreed to return to the clinic and restart therapy—an outcome that likely prevented significant clinical decline.
Jeff’s actions exemplify what it means to provide patient-driven, compassionate, and holistic nursing care. His advocacy protected the Veteran’s safety, reinforced continuity of treatment, and strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration. He saw a potential gap in care and didn’t hesitate—he acted swiftly, thoughtfully, and with deep respect for the Veteran’s needs. Jeff’s dedication, clinical insight, and genuine compassion embody the values of the DAISY Award. He truly made a difference in this Veteran’s life and demonstrated the profound impact of nursing excellence.
