This moment of healing and closure would not have been possible without Jeannie's compassion, insight, and deep respect for the emotional needs of both her patients and their families.
Jeannie works on one of the Hospice units at the Community Living Center (CLC), where she provides exceptional, compassionate end-of-life care to our Veterans and their families. Jeannie's compassion and intuition were beautifully demonstrated in her care for a Veteran who had been estranged from his grown children. She cared for this Veteran for several months, offering not only excellent clinical care but also a genuine human connection.
As his condition declined, a family member confided in Jeannie that he had reached out to the Veteran's children, letting them know their father was near the end of his life. Sensing that the Veteran was waiting for something, Jeannie encouraged the family to reach out to his children once more. Because of her gentle guidance and understanding, the children came to visit and say their final goodbyes.
Although the Veteran had been unresponsive for hours, he awoke upon their arrival and was able to say, "I'm sorry, and I love you." Just a few hours later, he passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside. This moment of healing and closure would not have been possible without Jeannie's compassion, insight, and deep respect for the emotional needs of both her patients and their families. She embodies the essence of nursing, care not just for the body, but for the heart and spirit as well.
Jeannie's actions reflect the very spirit of the DAISY Award. Her empathy and dedication bring comfort and dignity to Veterans in their final days, and her kindness leaves a lasting impact on everyone she encounters.
