Working in the behavioral pod on one of the busiest nights I recall, JC was part of the two RN team taking care of behavioral patients in the ER. During this night, the behavioral pod experienced extremely busy times, when several heavily agitated, aggressive, intoxicated, manic patients would come in minutes apart from one another. I have assisted JC and this other RN on multiple occasions when fast thinking and implementation of safety measures were needed in order to ensure the safety of these patients and our staff members. During this physically and mentally challenging night, I have not once witnessed JC complain, be upset, or not want to take care of another patient in distress. Instead, I have witnessed JC, despite the situation, treat every single patient with the utmost respect, kindness, and empathy. JC was able to de-escalate several severely agitated patients who posed a risk for harm to themselves and others, and did so in a manner that made me proud to be on the same team as him. I like to believe that we all choose to be part of the team because we love to serve our community. On this night, I felt proud and honored to be part of a team and work beside JC, who, without a doubt, was navigating every challenging situation with kindness, respect, and safety while helping to serve those in need of medical help. I would love nothing more than for JC to be recognized for his selfless acts of kindness throughout the night, for choosing to lead by example and treating every single patient, no matter the story, the way they deserve to be treated.
