There are moments in nursing that transcend clinical skill—moments that remind us why this profession exists. I had the privilege of witnessing one of those moments through Javondra.

Following one of the most tragic and completely unanticipated patient outcomes, Javondra became the steady presence this patient desperately needed. In a room filled with grief, uncertainty, and heartbreak, she was the only member of the care team with whom the patient felt safe enough to engage. That level of trust cannot be taught; it is earned through authentic compassion, unwavering presence, and extraordinary nursing.

Javondra never rushed the moment. She sat beside the patient, held her hand, and simply remained present while the patient processed unimaginable news. She offered reassurance that our team would continue to be there for her—not just in that moment, but whenever she needed us. Those words, delivered with sincerity and genuine empathy, provided comfort when very little else could.

One of the most moving moments I have witnessed in my nursing career occurred as the patient embraced Javondra. It was not a brief hug of appreciation. It was a long, powerful embrace that spoke louder than words ever could. It reflected the trust, safety, and compassion Javondra had created during the patient’s darkest hour.

Her compassion extended beyond the patient. As family members gathered in their own grief, Javondra intentionally embraced each one of them, offering comfort that transcended medical care. She recognized that healing begins with human connection, even when a cure is no longer possible.

Despite the emotional weight of the day, Javondra remained committed to providing exceptional care. She stayed beyond the end of her shift to ensure every responsibility was completed and every patient received the attention they deserved. She never allowed the circumstances to diminish the quality of her care or her commitment to excellence.

Javondra exemplifies nursing at its very best. She demonstrated clinical excellence, emotional intelligence, extraordinary compassion, and selfless dedication. Most importantly, she lived Prisma Health’s mission to Inspire Health. Serve with Compassion. Be the Difference.

Watching Javondra care for this patient and family reminded me of the very heart of nursing. As a nurse leader, moments like these remind me how incredibly fortunate I am to lead a team of professionals who choose compassion, presence, and humanity every single day.

Javondra did far more than provide exceptional nursing care—she became the calm in someone’s storm, the comfort in unimaginable grief, and the difference that this family will remember for the rest of their lives.

Javondra is the embodiment of what the DAISY Award represents, and deserves this recognition.
