Spencer’s unwavering calmness and compassion in such a fast-paced and high-pressure situation truly made a difference. He not only provided expert clinical assistance but also created a sense of peace for both the patient and her family.
(Jason) Spencer Rutledge is an exceptional nurse whose caring and compassionate nature truly sets him apart. He consistently goes above and beyond to ensure the well-being of patients and offers a calming presence in even the most stressful situations.

I was paged regarding a patient who had recently undergone outpatient surgery for an AICD placement. The patient was complaining of right neck and arm pain, even though the AICD had been placed on the left side. The physician requested an RRT to assess the patient and perform an EKG, so I responded with Spencer by my side to assist and provide extra support. Having an additional nurse in these situations is incredibly helpful, and Spencer's presence made all the difference.

When we arrived at the patient's room, the patient's husband was in the lobby, clearly anxious. As soon as he saw us, he approached and asked if we were there to help his wife. Spencer immediately took the lead in calming him, reassuring him, and invited him to come with us. His approach helped to ease the husband's anxiety right away. Once in the patient's room, the primary nurse provided an update, and Spencer and I began assessing the patient and performing the EKG. While I focused on the EKG, Spencer took the time to explain the procedure to the patient's husband, detailing what we were looking for and why the test was necessary. The patient was visibly distressed, crying out in pain due to neck discomfort. Spencer’s calming voice and presence helped the patient feel supported as I continued with the EKG.

When I returned to explain the plan to the patient and her husband, Spencer was still by their side, providing reassurance and comfort. I noticed him crouched down beside the patient, gently rubbing her neck to ease her discomfort. The patient and her husband were visibly calmer by this point, and the atmosphere in the room had shifted from anxiety to relief.

While we continued to work on transitioning the patient to inpatient care, Spencer remained focused on the patient, helping to alleviate her pain and anxiety. The primary RN then administered the pain medication as we brainstormed further comfort measures. One of the nurses suggested a heat pack, which Spencer promptly applied to the patient’s neck. By the time we left, the patient was no longer in pain, and both she and her husband were much more at ease.

Spencer’s unwavering calmness and compassion in such a fast-paced and high-pressure situation truly made a difference. He not only provided expert clinical assistance but also created a sense of peace for both the patient and her family. His dedication to patient care deserves recognition, as he played a key role in transforming a stressful situation into one of comfort and reassurance.
