Jason provided a calming environment for the patient and truly was with her every step of the way.
I wanted to take time to nominate Jason Broadwell for a DAISY Award for the compassion and kindness he displayed most recently. Jason was assigned to provide care to a patient who is in the process of being worked up for a heart transplant. When a patient is going through this journey, they are often in and out of the hospital, going through multiple admissions, procedures, and transfers from the ICU to the floor and back based on their clinical symptoms. This patient was a much younger woman who had had multiple visits to our procedural area, and with her anxiousness, these have been somewhat difficult for her to go through. More often than not, she would be able to receive moderate sedation for her procedures, but this time she was in need of a procedure, but had eaten recently.

Jason, knowing this patient's history, took it upon himself to walk over and have a long discussion with the patient's best interests in mind because he knew if we needed to proceed, that this was going to be extremely difficult for her to go through without moderate sedation. Jason collaborated with both nursing and our physicians to discuss the urgency of the procedure and the best course of action to ensure she received the best care she needed. Jason had spent almost an hour at the bedside engaging in discussion with the patient and ensuring he would be with her every step of the way, and took full ownership of going back and forth with updates between the patient, inpatient team, and performing provider. Jason was able to get the patient to agree to try to do this procedure without sedation, knowing her hesitancy to do so in this way. Not only was the patient able to get this procedure done but did so without sedation and done safely.

Jason provided a calming environment for the patient and truly was with her every step of the way. The empathy and compassion that Jason showed this patient are something we should all admire and strive to provide all of our patient care with. I am lucky to work with Jason and know that any patient he cares for will always be given the same treatment every time.
