Janine had an 87-year-old patient with a newly placed PEG tube, and he was supposed to go home in the morning. This man lived alone and was waiting for home health to be arranged. As we could not use the tube until late that evening, Janine went in to assist the patient with his PEG tube, every two hours - teaching him how to give himself boluses, and how to properly clean and flush the tube. She listened to the patient's needs, assessed his skill level, and patiently determined what teaching methods best suited his needs. By morning, he was much more confident and able to care for his tube himself, comfortably ready for his discharge home. I have watched Janine on the unit, and she is a fantastic patient educator at the bedside. This exemplifies the Banner culture of giving exceptional care. I am so proud of Janine as a nurse, and as my co-worker.
Janine demonstrated the Duffy Quality Caring model's caring factors of Attentive Reassurance and Encouraging Manner as she demonstrated patience and encouragement to this man, which gave him the skills and confidence needed to manage his health after discharge.
