The powerful impact and heart for what Janice manages daily...promoting positive morale, strength of character, and teamwork to get the job done.
Picture, if you will, the famous World War II poster of female icon, Rosie the Riveter, with her blue sleeves rolled up, arm pumped, and ready for work with the words “We Can Do It.” Let that image sit for a minute. Our team is proud to nominate Janice Powers, Assistant Nurse Manager of the Pre-Surgical Optimization (POP) and Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Program, for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.
In Janice, we have strong leadership reminiscent of that bygone era. Chuckle if you like at the analogy, but certainly the powerful impact and heart for what Janice manages daily is reminiscent of that time in promoting positive morale, strength of character, and teamwork to get the job done. Throughout this past year, in addition to the training of staff required for the successful transition to EPIC, Janice played a critical role in collaborating with leadership for optimizing the new POP/PAT location in what was previously the structurally unique cyberspace OR location. She was full-on with project management in facilitating the space to be functional, safe, and inviting to both patients and staff. Creativity and input from the entire team were solicited regularly from Janice as the project unfolded. Improvement to the original plans proposed would not have been realized without her rigor, careful attention to detail, and perseverance throughout. With Janice, We Can Do It.
Now for the day-to-day accolades. Janice is 1000% devoted to the success of the Stamford Hospital/Hospital for Special Surgery Collaboration POP/PAT program. In managing her staff, for the high-volume POP appointments, PAT call communications for all elective Tully and Stamford Hospital scheduled procedures, every minute is valuable. She brings a driven and focused approach to productivity each day with a positive, collaborative, and thoughtful demeanor. She engages the entire staff with our daily huddle and empowers us to be proactive and successful each day. Janice gives great effort in making staff feel supported and prioritizes effective communication and teamwork. She consistently seeks out staff to verify information and works elbow to elbow to this end. With Janice, We Can Do It.
Under Janice's leadership, the POP/PAT team has been recognized for the 2025 Connecticut Hospital Association John D. Thompson Award for excellence in the delivery of healthcare through the use of data, which resulted in a 57% decrease in surgical mortality and a 73% reduction in overall morbidity; 2023 Certificate of Recognition from The Patient Experience Committee for achieving outstanding patient experience results, exceeding goal for Likelihood to Recommend; and, 2022 Team Excellence Award for exemplary performance, advocacy, and commitment to high quality care for patients, families, and staff at Stamford Health. With Janice, We Can Do It.
It’s not all work and no play. Our Unit Based Magnet Binder reflects the rigors of the POP/PAT work as well as photo highlights for our activities of enjoyment. We have great fun with the annual pumpkin decorating contest, birthday, holiday, and cultural food celebrations, UBB enrichment activities, wellness challenges, and, most recently, capturing the hearts of the Magnet Team in winning the Outpatient Quality Magnet Board presentation with a star-studded Hollywood theme. Janice is supportive of these enjoyable activities and opportunities to share happy vibes and feel-good moments for the team. With Janice, We Can Do It.
We appreciate that Janice has tremendous support from the leadership of Paulette Harris, Clinical Director of Tully Perioperative Services. We are truly grateful for Paulette’s role in elevating both Janice and our team. Janice is an extraordinary nurse leader, and her longstanding dedication and commitment make her highly deserving of this prestigious award. It is with great pride and gratitude that the POP/PAT team nominates Janice Powers for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. Thank you.
