Janene Sickle, the most senior nurse (25 years) of the Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU) staff at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, displays incredible leadership and models kind and compassionate nursing care. She goes well above and beyond in considering the needs of patients and their families. As a colleague and friend for 12 years, I was deeply touched when I visited her home a few weeks before the holidays and saw her dining room filled with unwrapped gifts.

Janene explained that the NICU had initiated a Holiday Adopt-A-Family program more than 10 years ago. This year, the staff selected the families of two individuals for whom they had provided care earlier in 2024. Janene led efforts to organize a "Holiday Gift Wreath," collecting gift cards and creating a Gift Wish List to support the children and family members of these individuals. With the help of the NICU team, Janene coordinated holiday visits and gift deliveries to the families, who expressed heartfelt gratitude.

Recognizing that this generous program requires the support of the entire staff, I am nominating Janene Sickle for a DAISY Award in recognition of her longstanding nursing leadership in the NICU and her specific initiative in furthering the Holiday Adopt-A-Family program.
