Janelle’s care went far beyond compassion; it was truly advocacy in action.
There are moments in life when kindness becomes medicine. When compassion heals something inside of you more deeply than any IV or prescription, and that’s because there are people that you come across in life at exactly the right moment, people who carry a special light without even realizing it.

After years of being in and out of the hospitals, searching for answers to an infection that just refused to leave my body, I had grown used to being dismissed and unheard. Each visit has begun to blur into the next, another round of antibiotics, another discharge, and more unanswered questions. But in October 2025, my nurse, Janelle, helped me change that. When she walked into my room, I instantly knew and felt this hospital stay was going to be different. She smiled so brightly that she didn’t rush me while I spoke to her. Janelle did not treat me like I was just another chart or an unknown diagnosis. She spoke to me with pure respect, very gentle, very genuinely, and with more compassion than I personally have ever witnessed.

After speaking to the infectious disease doctor the next day, I had the worst panic attack due to that doctor not listening to understand me and not giving much of his time to even try. Just laughed at me and smiled as I cried, trying to explain my health to him. When the fear and exhaustion set in and took that moment of me over, Janelle didn’t treat me like a patient having another “episode”. She didn’t tell me to calm down or leave the room and forget about me. She immediately sat in the chair beside my bed, grounded me with her voice, reminded me to breathe, and gave me, in that moment, the kind of presence that makes you feel safe, even when your body is failing you.

Janelle’s care went far beyond compassion; it was truly advocacy in action. She made sure every concern was heard by the doctors and that every symptom was taken seriously, and that real steps were taken to find the truth behind what is happening in my body. It is because of her that I began to finally receive answers after years of confusion and frustration. When you’ve been sick for so long, you start to feel invisible. However, it reminded me that I wasn’t and showed me what a true nurse is supposed to be. It is easy to say someone went “above & beyond,” but Janelle really did. Janelle is the type of nurse who carries grace in her every movement, empathy in every word, and strength in her fierce and quiet persistence. She made an impact on me, and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life.
