Jane was taking care of siblings in our PACU area who both had surgery with us. Their mother and grandmother were overwhelmed with the situation, with one child waking up very slowly and one acting very wild, which included constant hitting and biting. Jane did not hesitate to keep the patients and others safe, holding the child who was displaying aggressive behavior and also directing the mom on how best to handle the situation with both children and her concerns about their post-op care.

When I saw Jane's efforts, I witnessed genuine nursing care in action. This was the selfless, patient-first care that Novant Health hopes to see from its nurses. Jane provided kind and informative care to the patients and their mothers. This situation persisted for quite some time before ending when the child was properly seated in their car seat with a seatbelt. This situation was remarkable, and it is one of many that we see Jane work through fairly regularly, sometimes unfortunately.
