This is truly a sign of leadership and going above and beyond for our patients.
Jane is the Clinical Nurse IV in 5T, where she coordinates and leads the unit throughout the day, overseeing patient throughput and the escalation of clinical issues, while managing the floor. Through all of this, Jane was able to coordinate a family request that she had never met before.
When a US Veteran passed away unexpectedly one morning, his significant other had a couple of requests that we had never fulfilled in the past. Jane reached out to Security to see if they could help. The requests were for an American flag and for his significant other to accompany him to the morgue to pay honor to the motto "No Veteran Dies Alone."
An officer from our UCIPD responded to the call and said that, as a Veteran himself, he wanted to help honor the family's wishes. He brought an extra American flag that his department had and said he would graciously pay for another one to replace it. Since non-staff members are not allowed into the morgue, he committed to accompanying the patient there himself.
He asked our House Supervisor if we had an "Honor Walk" or "Final Salute" program for deceased veterans, but unfortunately, we did not. Since our facility did not have this program, we could not announce it hospital-wide. Under Jane's leadership, 5T, including EVS members, volunteer services, the Chaplain, RNs, and SHAs, did an Honor Walk alongside the security team and the patient's family. The entire team showed appreciation and support for our veteran.
This is truly a sign of leadership and going above and beyond for our patients. Thank you, Jane, for your leadership.
