As she explained the process, her empathy and compassion were such a help to me.
Occupational Health nurses are probably overlooked in health care since we (employees) don't typically think of ourselves as patients when at work. Jan Tietjen, however, exemplifies everything about the DAISY Award. I recently had a bloodborne pathogen exposure at work and, needless to say, I was quite distressed about it. As the manager of Occupational Health, Jan could have easily delegated the work to one of her nurses, but she took my call and patiently listened as I described the situation. Despite being considered a low-risk exposure, Jan understood how I was feeling. As she explained the process, her empathy and compassion were such a help to me. The next day, knowing I was still anxious about the situation, she called me to explain where we were in the process of obtaining & processing lab work. Once the lab results came back, she contacted me directly to give the good news. Jan's kindness and compassion stand out, and her actions are an example to nurses at this hospital.
