No matter how demanding or busy his assignment, James manages to remain focused on the patient and not just the task and does his best to provide compassionate care so that patients feel heard and cared for.
James consistently demonstrates compassionate care for his patients. A great example would be a recent shift where he had 6 patients of which 5 were experiencing issues. He had a fresh CBI patient which required him to be in the room every 30mins, an extremely anxious patient with an NGT, a patient complaining of extreme pain from an ileus s/p C-Section, a patient s/p ex lap for SBO with copious drainage from JP Drain causing extreme anxiety, and a non-compliant patient refusing all assessments despite being s/p stent placement. With patience and great communication skills, James was able to calm his extremely anxious patients, while convincing his non-compliant patient to agree to an assessment. With the patient who was in pain, he did his best to repeatedly reach out to MDs overnight, and even though he felt he was not able to fully help her manage her pain and get comfortable, the patient told him when he returned for his 2nd shift that she "really appreciated all that he did for her and that he was very helpful." With the patient s/p ex lap for SBO with copious drainage from JP Drain causing extreme anxiety, James made sure to spend time in the room answering all his questions and explaining the medical workup. With all this going on, he still went in every 30mins for the CBI. No matter how demanding or busy his assignment, James manages to remain focused on the patient and not just the task and does his best to provide compassionate care so that patients feel heard and cared for. When you hear James speak about his patients, its easy to tell he takes the time to get to know them beyond just the SBAR.
