First, I'd like to say all the nurses we had on 9-C were wonderful! My husband was having a procedure to get him ready to enter hospice. The entire family was devastated. Two months before that, he appeared to be a healthy male with no health problems. The cancer was so aggressive that it caught us off guard. We couldn't believe we were meeting with someone to explain the hospice program. The air was so thick in that room. While Jake was going about doing the things nurses do, he noticed the atmosphere, and that's when his special skills came through. He pulled up a chair next to my husband and said, "X, tell me who you are. Where did you grow up? What did you do? Who is X?" Before you knew it, we were all laughing, telling Jake many stories, and X was proud to tell Jake all the accomplishments he had made in his life. It was as if the sun started to shine in our room. He was able to control the atmosphere from one that was dark to one that was bright. As a retired teacher, I have seen many support groups and have never encountered anyone who could make everyone feel as good and work the group like Jake did. Not only giving X great care, but also looking at X for who he was and not some weak individual, helped us get through this situation. Jake is definitely Regions' gem!!!"
