My wife and I set out for the hospital to welcome our son into the world, and continued to hope and pray for a quick and easy delivery.

My wife labored until 1:27 in the morning when she gave birth to a healthy baby boy! However, what happened next was traumatic and terrifying.

For the next seven hours, my wife lay in bed in blinding and agonizing pain. The initial nurses insisted this was pretty standard discomfort after delivering a baby, but what was happening to my wife was anything but standard.

Holding my newborn son in my arms was a dream come true, but seeing how much pain my wife was in was an absolute nightmare. She lay in a hospital bed screaming in pain for 6 hours, but it seemed like an eternity.

At the 7:30 a.m. shift change, we were blessed with Nurse Jaime. I truly believe she is the closest thing to what I imagine an angel would be.

Nurse Jaime literally saved my wife's life. She had asked if anyone had turned my wife over yet to check where her pain was coming from, and no one else had. Jaime’s suggestion set in motion the next several hours of saving my wife's life.

After Jaime suggested turning my wife over, she discovered a grapefruit-sized hematoma filled with blood. During delivery, my wife suffered what has been described to me as an incredibly rare and oftentimes fatal to mother and baby iliac artery tear, causing her to bleed internally.

The next 12 hours were some of the scariest and most stressful moments of my life, not to mention all of the thoughts, feelings, and emotions my wife was experiencing after delivering her first child, not knowing what was going on, and unable to hold her newborn baby.

Doctors rushed to get my wife into emergency surgery to repair the arterial tear and stop the bleeding while I sat with my son in our hospital room waiting and needing my wife to be ok.

There are not enough good things I can say about Nurse Jaime. During my wife's procedure, she kept running back and forth, updating me and keeping me informed, which helped calm my nerves a little. She also helped me with my newborn son during all that time.

All it took was one nurse to recognize this was not normal post-delivery pain. Jaime didn't brush off my wife's cries; she went above and beyond to help her and quite literally saved her life.

Post-surgery, when my wife was recovering, Jaime came to let me know the procedure was successful, and she would be returning to our room. Seeing my wife's face when the door opened was the closest I've ever felt to believing in something greater.

Jaime stayed and helped during my wife's recovery, checking in constantly, helping her learn to breastfeed, and calming our baby boy when both of our nerves were through the roof.

Before Jaime left the hospital for a few and much deserved days off, she came by one last time to hug us goodbye and gave my older son a "big brother" bracelet, something he hasn't taken off since.

Her attention to detail, knowledge, and incredible bedside manner made us feel comfortable and heard. There is literally not a scenario where I can picture life without my wife, and thanks to Jaime, I don't have to know what that would look like. We are eternally grateful for her dedication to care and her kindness and compassion for our family.

Jaime doesn't just deserve this award; it should be named after her!

Thank you forever, Jaime!
