Jahnavi Mathur, RN
It is my honor to nominate Jahnavi Mathur, RN, for recognition as an extraordinary nurse. In today's healthcare environment, technical skill alone is not enough. A truly exceptional nurse combines clinical excellence with compassion, empathy, professionalism, patience, and the ability to make every patient feel seen, heard, and safe. Jahnavi embodies all of these qualities. From the moment she entered my room, Jahnavi introduced herself and the nursing student she was precepting, B. Rather than assuming I would be comfortable with a student participating in my care, she respectfully asked for my permission and explained his role. That simple act demonstrated her respect for patient autonomy and immediately established trust.
As B prepared to insert my IV, Jahnavi displayed remarkable leadership and mentorship. She patiently coached him through each step, offering guidance without criticism or impatience. She never made him feel inadequate, nor did she try to overshadow his learning. Instead, she empowered him while keeping my comfort and safety as her top priority. It was evident she understood that great nurses not only care for patients; they cultivate the next generation of compassionate caregivers.
What impressed me most was that I never felt like I was simply being practiced on throughout the procedure. Jahnavi and B worked seamlessly as a team, continually checking on my comfort, explaining what to expect next, and making me feel like an active participant in my care. Their communication, professionalism, and kindness transformed what could have been an anxious emergency room visit into one where I felt genuinely cared for. As a United States Army veteran living with PTSD, unfamiliar medical situations can be especially stressful. B's military service created an immediate sense of familiarity and understanding that greatly eased my anxiety. I have no doubt that the confidence, compassion, and professionalism he demonstrated directly reflect the outstanding mentorship he receives from Jahnavi. She is not only teaching clinical skills; she is modeling the character, empathy, and humanity that define exceptional nursing.
Together, Jahnavi and B reminded me of what nursing is truly meant to be. They exemplified teamwork, respect, compassion, patience, and excellence. They treated me as a person, not just another patient or another task to complete. Their care left a lasting impression, and I will remember it long after my emergency room visit.
