From managing the chest tubes and JP drain outputs to titrating drips and giving medications, Jacques somehow still found a way to speak to the patient as if they were part of the ongoing situation, and included them in the plan of care.
I was working on the same shift as Jacques, but on the other side of our unit. However, I personally witnessed how much Jacques went above and beyond to take care of his patient who was on ECMO in CVCU. The patient needed multiple amounts of blood, and quick thinking was needed to keep the patient's hemodynamics stable. I saw how Jacques coordinated care between the doctors, nurses, perfusionists, and respiratory therapists to make sure that the patient was safe amidst the chaos happening right after the patient was cannulated for ECMO. The patient ultimately had to end up going back to the operating room to fix what was causing the bleeding, but Jacques never failed to show compassion and care towards the patient, even when things weren't going the way the care team intended. From managing the chest tubes and JP drain outputs to titrating drips and giving medications, Jacques somehow still found a way to speak to the patient as if they were part of the ongoing situation, and included them in the plan of care. The way Jacques also talked with the patient's family, making sure that they are also included in what's going on with the patient, despite the commotion. The family had a hard time grasping the severity of the experience, but Jacques made it so that the family understood what the care team was doing and where the direction of the care for the patient was heading. I have seen numerous nurses keep their critical patients stable, but completely forgot that amidst the turmoil, there is still a patient and a family that is present, and seeing Jacques coordinate everything while keeping calm and collected was a sight for me to see.
