Jacob Wellman, RN
I am honored to recognize Jake from St. Mary’s Hospital for the exceptional care and presence he demonstrated during my mother’s time in the intensive care unit for a hypertension crisis. His attentiveness and compassion made an immeasurable difference during a difficult and unsettling time for our family.
What stood out immediately was Jake’s kindness, compassion, and ability to be fully present. He didn’t simply enter the room to complete tasks to be completed. He arrived with intention, calm, and genuine humanity. In a setting that can feel overwhelming, he created a sense of steadiness and safety.
I shared with Jake my concern about my dad’s ability to hear and fully comprehend the medical explanation and details about my mother’s condition. Instead of brushing off my concern, he paused, acknowledged the importance of what I was saying, and adjusted thoughtfully and carefully. He made sure my dad could follow the conversation, repeating information clearly and checking for understanding in a way that honored both my dad’s dignity and his need to stay connected to what was happening with my mom.
Jake’s kindness was evident in every interaction. He treated my mother with tenderness and professionalism, and he treated our family with compassion that felt both sincere and comforting. He spoke to my parents with patience and respect, never making them feel like a burden for needing things repeated or explained differently.
Jake’s willingness to help extended far beyond clinical responsibilities. He anticipated emotional needs as much as medical ones. He made space for questions, offered reassurance without minimizing the seriousness of the situation, and ensured that we felt informed, included, and supported at every step.
Jake exemplifies what it means to care for the whole family, not just the patient. His presence, attentiveness, and heartfelt compassion brought clarity and comfort during one of the hardest moments of our lives. I am profoundly grateful for the way he showed up for us, and I submit this nomination for the DAISY Award with deep appreciation.
