He talked me through everything to make sure that I understood what was happening and what the plan was. When they started to extubate her, he stayed right by our side.
Jake was the nurse who took care of us the first morning after my daughter's accident. She was in a sledding accident on January 4th that caused brain bleeding, skull fracturing, carotid artery damage, and liver bleeding. Jake came in and was the first person to sit down with me and ask me if I was okay. I had sat up with my daughter all night and watched her, knowing that she might not wake up from being intubated and that it was a very serious situation.

He sat with me and asked me if I had eaten. He was also the first person that I interacted with at PCH who didn't come in with an attitude that seemed to blame my husband or me for the sledding accident. He talked me through everything to make sure that I understood what was happening and what the plan was. When they started to extubate her, he stayed right by our side.

He knew that she loved the music from Wicked, so he brought in his tablet to play the music for her while she was waking and for a few hours after to help her stay calm. He listened to our concerns and made sure that, as the parents, we were taking care of ourselves, so that we could better take care of her. He got permission to allow my other daughter to come in and sit with us for a few minutes so that she could see her sister was awake and breathing after she witnessed the accident.

I will forever be grateful for the care he showed my family. It is not often that you find a nurse who goes above and beyond to not only care for the patient, but also recognizes that parents of pediatric patients are a holistic part of caring for the patient. He connected with our children and helped speak to them on their level to help them with fear and anxiety about their situation. He has changed how I see my patients. I am also a nurse with Intermountain. I will forever see my patient differently because of him. One nurse can make a huge difference in the life of a family.
