Some nurses care for patients. Others change lives. Jacob Edwards did both.
I recently witnessed Jacob provide one of the most compassionate acts of nursing I have ever seen. He was caring for a critically ill, unstable patient whose final wish was to be baptized. While many would have focused solely on the medical complexity of the situation, Jacob recognized that this patient's spiritual needs were just as important as his physical ones. Jacob worked diligently to stabilize the patient so this wish could safely become a reality. He coordinated with another department, personally escorted the patient, and then did something truly extraordinary—he physically helped the patient into the baptismal tub, supported him as he was fully submerged, and remained by his side throughout the ceremony to ensure his safety. In that moment, Jacob wasn't just administering medications or monitoring vital signs. He was preserving a patient's dignity, honoring his faith, and helping fulfill what may have been one of the final wishes of his life. He saw the person before the diagnosis and understood that healing sometimes looks very different than curing. This is not an isolated act of kindness.
Jacob brings this same servant's heart to every shift. He is an exceptional critical care nurse, an advocate for his patients, a mentor to new nurses, and a trusted resource within our ICU. He willingly teaches others, supports his coworkers without hesitation, and consistently puts the needs of his patients first. As his nurse manager, I am incredibly proud of the nurse Jacob has become. His clinical excellence is remarkable, but it is his compassion, humility, and unwavering commitment to treating every patient with dignity that make him truly extraordinary. Jacob reminded all of us that nursing is not only about saving lives, but it is also about honoring them. I cannot imagine a nurse who better embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award.
