Jackie consistently goes far beyond what is expected, forming meaningful relationships and ensuring her patients feel seen, valued, and never alone.
I would like to proudly recognize Jacqueline “Jackie” Willis for her extraordinary compassion, dedication, and unwavering advocacy for her patients. Jackie has a uniquely calming presence and an exceptional ability to connect with patients, particularly those who arrive anxious, overwhelmed, or upset. She has a remarkable “way” with individuals who are irate or distressed, consistently de-escalating situations with patience, empathy, and respect. Patients immediately sense her sincerity and feel safe in her care.

One especially meaningful example of Jackie’s compassion involves a patient with significant anxiety surrounding needle sticks and medical visits. He often attended appointments alone, as his only support person, his brother, was unable to accompany him due to work obligations. The patient had experienced profound personal loss, including the deaths of his son, mother, and sister, and lived a very isolated life. His moped served as his sole means of transportation.

In January, the patient experienced disease progression and took the news very hard. He became despondent, expressing that he was “done” and wanted to be with his son. As a result, he missed appointments for several months after giving up hope. When he courageously returned to the office in March, Jackie was instrumental in helping him re-engage with his care, offering steady encouragement, kindness, and emotional support.

When the patient eventually required IV chemotherapy beginning in August, Jackie went above and beyond in a way that exemplifies the heart of nursing. On his very first day of treatment, she came in on her day off specifically to sit with him so that he would not have to face such a daunting experience alone. She repeated this act of selflessness multiple times throughout his treatment course.

In addition, Jackie often accompanied him during provider visits to ensure he fully understood his plan of care, reinforcing education and helping reduce his anxiety. Jackie consistently checked on him by phone, always mindful of his preferences, carefully timing her calls to avoid interrupting the lunchtime television programs he enjoyed. She would call to assess how he was feeling, provide encouragement, or remind him of upcoming appointments.

Recognizing that the weather significantly affected his ability to travel safely on his moped, Jackie thoughtfully adjusted his schedule whenever possible so he would not have to risk riding in the rain or miss appointments. Right before Christmas, the patient was admitted to the hospital. While he was waiting in the Emergency Department for an inpatient bed, Jackie went out of her way to come see him, offering comfort and familiarity during a frightening and lonely time.

During his hospitalization, his brother contacted the office, specifically asking to speak with Jackie. He let her know the patient had transitioned to full-service hospice and asked that she pray for their family, a profound testament to the trust and connection Jackie had built. The patient passed away at the beginning of the new year, yet Jackie’s compassion did not end there. She has since remained in contact with the patient’s brother, continuing to offer support even after the patient’s passing.

This is only one example of the extraordinary care Jackie provides every day. She is deeply loving and compassionate, yet also understands when gentle “tough love” is needed to advocate for her patients’ best interests. Jackie consistently goes far beyond what is expected, forming meaningful relationships and ensuring her patients feel seen, valued, and never alone.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Jackie on our team here at Cleveland. She truly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award and the very best of nursing.
