It is difficult to capture Ivan’s impact as a nurse in a single story, because what makes him extraordinary is not a single situation, but the full picture of who he is and what he represents. Since my very first day in the EP Lab, I have been blown away by his clinical expertise, his compassionate presence with both patients and coworkers, and his ability to remain calm in the most difficult circumstances. Even in the midst of chaos, Ivan creates space for teaching and learning, ensuring those around him grow stronger as a team. If I were asked to choose just one interaction to highlight, it would be his constant drive to evolve and find ways to serve his patients and community even better.

As a Spanish-speaking nurse, Ivan became a certified medical interpreter to provide high-quality, compassionate care for Spanish-speaking patients and their families. One patient encounter especially stands out. We had a young patient visiting from South America who became ill and required a TEE procedure. Ivan not only translated medical information clearly but also offered comfort and reassurance to this young patient who was far from home and scared. After our work in the EP lab was finished, Ivan went out of his way, on his own time, to gather coworkers, stop by the gift shop, and bring a small gift to the patient. This gesture made her feel cared for while she waited for her mother to arrive from another country. He even stopped by with other EP Lab staff during her hospital stay to make sure she felt supported and never alone.

This is just one example of the countless ways Ivan lives out compassion, excellence, and professionalism every single day. He embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award, not only through his exceptional nursing skills but also through the heart and humanity he brings to every interaction. Patients, families, and colleagues alike are better for having Ivan by their side.
