She met the family where they were emotionally, advocated fiercely for the patient, and reminded me, yet again, that nursing is about so much more than tasks and checklists.
I am a senior nursing student at the University of Wyoming. As part of our program requirements, we must complete 360 clinical hours during our preceptorship to graduate. I chose to complete my clinical hours at Bryan Health East Campus. During this time, I had the privilege of being paired with Isabell as my preceptor.

Over the course of these 360 hours, I have witnessed Isabell’s unwavering dedication to her patients and the nursing profession. Each shift spent with her has left me in awe of her compassion, skill, and professionalism. She consistently goes above and beyond to connect with her patients on a personal level, creating an environment of trust, safety, and dignity. The number of times I have heard patients tell her, “You are such a great nurse,” is truly countless-and each time, I couldn’t agree more.

Isabell embodies every aspect of what it means to be a nurse. She prioritized patient safety, autonomy, and advocacy, always treating those in her care with the utmost respect and empathy. She has not only helped me strengthen my clinical abilities but has also taught me the importance of building meaningful relationships with patients-something that cannot be taught in a classroom.

There are so many moments that have left a lasting impression on me, but one story in particular stands out. We received report on a patient whose family member had reportedly been recording the nursing staff during their interactions in the room. Understandably, this raised concerns and created an uncomfortable dynamic. However, Isabell remained composed, professional, and empathetic. Rather than approaching the situation with frustration or judgment, she entered the room with an open heart and a calm presence.

Through her kindness and genuine concern, the patient’s family opened up to her. They shared that the patient had experienced significant neglect at a facility, as well as a history of abuse from a family member. It became clear that their protectiveness stemmed from fear and trauma, not malice. Isabell responded not with defensiveness, but with compassion. She reassured them, validated their concerns, and worked collaboratively with them to ensure the patient felt safe and respected.

That interaction exemplified everything Isabell stands for as a nurse. She met the family where they were emotionally, advocated fiercely for the patient, and reminded me, yet again, that nursing is about so much more than tasks and checklists. It’s about showing up wholeheartedly for those in our care, even in the most complex situations.

All while balancing the many demands of her role as a nurse, Isabell still found time to support me in my journey beyond just clinical hours. Throughout our time together, she went out of her way to show me what an amazing place Bryan Health is to work. Her pride in her team and the organization was always evident, and it was contagious. Thanks to her encouragement and guidance, I was able to secure a position on the very same unit that I completed my preceptorship on.

Isabell has not only helped me grow into a confident and competent nurse, but she has also inspired me to begin my career in a place where compassion, teamwork, and patient-centered care are clearly valued. I am beyond excited to start this next chapter, and I owe so much to her mentorship and belief in me!

Izzy is not only an extraordinary nurse but also an exceptional human being. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had her as my preceptor, and I know I will be a better nurse in the future because of her guidance!
