He was attentive, informative, and caring. Without his interactions, I fear our journey would be much worse, as his helpfulness and conversation helped us to be at peace.
Please accept this nomination for Ian Zacharias as he demonstrates all of the qualities of a DAISY Nurse and emulates the values of UPMC. This can be seen through the nomination left from each family member of a young dying patient post cardiac arrest with brain injury. Ian took great care of a loving son, father, and husband in his final days. He checked in on a family who was losing a dad to a 2-year-old and 1 month old. Not to mention the incredible care he provided and emotional support to his wife. The world needs more people like Ian.

Nurse Ian is caring and efficient. We had no doubt our nephew was receiving the best care. He also took care of the family; He was patient and kind to all of us. He gently shared information and gave us time to digest. Ian is a treasure, and those in his care are blessed. Ian took unconditional care of K and showed unwavering support for our family. His heart and passion for his work are evident.

My brother had a traumatic brain injury due to cardiac arrest. As my family watched him in a coma, unsure of his future, Ian cared for him and his family each day. He was a blessing to everyone during this awful time. He was attentive, informative, and caring. Without his interactions, I fear our journey would be much worse, as his helpfulness and conversation helped us to be at peace. He went above and beyond in everything he did. We will be forever grateful for his care and remember him always.

My son suffered a cardiac arrest and was deprived of oxygen. His brain was injured. Even though we knew it was bad, Ian was the best caring nurse we could ask for. He took exceptional care of my son and all of us.

I have worked with Ian for many years, and it has been truly remarkable to watch him grow throughout his nursing career. Having worked through the COVID-19 pandemic, Ian is no stranger to caring for the critically ill. Most recently, he was caring for one of the sickest patients on our unit, a young woman who required multiple vasopressors and ventilator support. The prognosis was devastating, and she ended up passing away within a week of her arrival. During that time, I watched Ian provide exceptional care not only to her, but to her family as well. He was there to support them as they said their goodbyes, and though her family was not able to be present at the end, I witnessed Ian sitting at the bedside, playing music, and holding her hand as she transitioned. I hope Ian knows what a valuable member he is to our unit, and that he maintains his compassion as he continues through his nursing career.
