I want to tell the world about an amazing RN on the 9th floor of the Buffalo VAMC. So, I need to start at the beginning. After 8 years of putting off a total knee replacement of my left knee, I finally have had enough. I met with the orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Miller. He told me that this was going to be very painful, especially due to my height and weight. He was not kidding. I had my surgery in March of 2026. When I woke up, I was told my surgery went very well. I spent the first couple of days on the 5th floor. A caseworker was assigned to me, and we talked about going to rehab. I told him that it was my intention to go to rehab when discharged. He told me the VA had a rehab unit on the 9th floor, which surprised me. He then told me that, because of my rating, I was eligible to go there. They had plenty of empty beds on 9A, so they transferred me. This is where I met my nurse, who would be in charge of my care over the next few days and many more.

Over many interactions we had I found out what an exceptional caregiver, nurse and person he is. I have been a patient in different hospitals, including the Syracuse VA. This nurse is in a class by himself. For many RNs, nursing is just another job, but not for him. Deep down, he is a true caregiver. He earned my trust, which, in my opinion, is very important. He helped me transfer to the toilet, cleaned me, and maintained my dignity as I returned to bed. He gently lifted my surgical leg back onto the bed and made sure that I had my pain medication “on board”. His caring is nothing like I have experienced before. He may have a language barrier, but he makes up for it with outstanding care and compassion. I will end this story here and pray he is recognized for his outstanding dedication to patient care. There are many caregivers in the world, but only one like him.

Thank you, Huruy, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
