Hope Powell, RN

We would like to commend Hope Powell because she truly embodied every core quality of care that AdventHealth represents. My mother had been sick for almost a year and had struggled with significant pain for a long time. As her health continued to decline, one of our greatest challenges was making sure she was comfortable and cared for with dignity. Hope was my mother’s nurse on the last night of her life. That evening, she did more than care for my mother medically. She truly listened, heard her, and showed her compassion as she tucked my mother into bed on her final night.

Hope made sure her pain was addressed but also recognized that comfort goes far beyond medication. She brought my mother a warm compress to help ease her discomfort and help her sleep. The next morning, my mother called our family and told us how special and loved Hope had made her feel that night. Shortly after waking, my mother sadly passed away.

My mother had been a nurse herself for many years and often spoke about the importance of the small acts of kindness we can offer the people around us. Hope demonstrated exactly that. To our family, the simple act of making sure my mother was warm, comfortable, and cared for as she settled in for the night means more than we can ever express. That warm compress, that gentle act of compassion, was like a warm embrace – a final hug and goodnight that we, her family, were unable to give her ourselves. Knowing that my mother felt safe, loved, and comforted during some of her final moments has brought our family an immeasurable sense of peace.

Hope gave our mother something incredibly precious in her final hours: not only skilled nursing care, but genuine human compassion. For these reasons, we are deeply grateful and believe she is exceptionally deserving of the DAISY Award. She reminded us that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can become the most meaningful gifts – and that compassionate care can stay with a family long after a loved one is gone.
