I learned that my father was going to die. I was distraught at the thought he wouldn’t be able to meet his new granddaughter. I asked my nurse, Holly, if there was any possible way I could see him one last time. Holly made what I thought was going to be impossible, possible.
In January was the day I was scheduled for my C-section. Like most people about to have a newborn, it’s a day filled with excitement and nerves. Unfortunately for me, it was also a day filled with dread and grief because my father was transferred to the ICU and unresponsive as I was getting ready to leave.
One could say it was pure luck that he happened to be at the same hospital as me. I was able to delay my surgery so I could see him beforehand. After delivering my child, I learned that my father was going to die. I was distraught at the thought he wouldn’t be able to meet his new granddaughter. I asked my nurse, Holly, if there was any possible way I could see him one last time.
Holly made what I thought was going to be impossible, possible. She coordinated with the ICU to allow my newborn and me to visit. She was able to retrieve a NICU crib, so my daughter wouldn’t be at risk for contracting any illnesses. Two other nurses helped move my daughter, while Holly personally transferred me in a wheelchair.
Luckily, my father experienced a surge and woke up by the time we got to the ICU. Because of Holly, my father was able to meet and hold my daughter. He did end up getting discharged a few days after I got home, but sadly, he passed away this morning. If Holly had not gone above and beyond for me, my father would have never met his granddaughter.
Because of Holly, I was able to receive such a beautiful gift. Words can never come close to expressing my deepest gratitude towards her. If there is ever anyone who deserves a DAISY award, it is her. She is the epitome of compassion. Thank you so much, Holly, and I will never forget what you did for my family.
