I have been in healthcare for over 10 years now and have worked with many nurses. A nurse that stands out to me is Holly. We had a medical emergency on the unit for a patient who was supposed to be discharged that same day. Holly's patient was getting up with the nursing assistants to use the bathroom and ended up having a previous incision open up and start bleeding profusely. Upon arrival to the room, Holly immediately grabbed a bath blanket to use as a tourniquet to try to stop the bleeding while simultaneously calling her charge nurse. The charge nurse responded, almost slipping in the puddles of blood, and called an RRT. Several staff members responded, but Holly and her charge nurse really stuck out to me as they were on top of their game, calling out what they needed to tend to the patient and keep her stable.

After being assessed by the attending provider, the patient was immediately taken to surgery and is now in the ICU for recovery. If it weren't for their quick thinking, knowledge, and teamwork, the patient may not have made it to surgery and could have had a different outcome. After the incident, Holly saw the family coming down the hallway, and she detoured them to our family room so they did not see the puddles of blood left by their loved one. She did not want them to be traumatized from the incident and have that memory of their family embedded in their heads. If I were ever to be a patient on the unit, I would 100% want Holly as my nurse.
