Even on days when Holly wasn’t a primary nurse, she always came by to check on him and do whatever she could to help with his care.
Sometimes you are blessed with people who are brought into your life at the exact moment you need them the most. For us, Holly is one of those people. Looking back over our 36-day journey in the PICU with our son, we had a series of ups and downs and met some amazing nurses and doctors along the way. While many will always be in our memory, Holly is the one person who stands out to us above the rest. While in the PICU, we experienced one of the most frightening nights of our lives, seemingly coming close to losing our son. Waking up the next morning, still raw from the emotions of the night before, we were warmly greeted by Holly and instantly felt at ease with a sense of peace. The compassion and kindness that she had for J and our entire family were felt immediately. Holly had a way of speaking to J that made it feel like she had known him for much longer than just a few minutes. Perhaps it is just her calming nature, but the way she cared for J that very first day when he seemed the most fragile to us was something that we simply cannot do justice by putting into words. We were fortunate to have had Holly as a dedicated nurse for a few of the days during our stay, and would have given anything to have had her with J full-time. Even on days when Holly wasn’t a primary nurse, she always came by to check on him and do whatever she could to help with his care. Holly was a pillar of support for our family in all of our interactions, whether it be something as simple as washing J’s hair for the first time or explaining medical procedures and experiences that would help us to better grapple with the information and decisions we were facing. When the conversation around a tracheostomy came to be with the doctors, she brought us a stoma to help us understand and feel more comfortable with the conversations. It’s a series of seemingly little things and moments that for us add up to a mountain of gratitude for her. Holly’s expertise in nursing and experience definitely shine through, but it’s her style of care that has changed our lives for the better and will forever shape how we view the nursing profession. Holly – we will forever be grateful for you and your care for J!
