Hildebrando Gonzalez Herrera, RN
I would like to commend Hilde for his unwavering advocacy, compassion, and dedication to doing what was right for a vulnerable patient.
He faced a complex situation involving the patient’s wishes and care preferences, and he went above and beyond to ensure those wishes were honored. The patient arrived in critical condition due to a possible case of neglect and, upon arrival, was rapidly declining. The person listed as the power of attorney was allegedly the possible perpetrator, so Hilde went through the proper channels to verify the information and prevent anything from being lost in translation.
As a charge nurse, Hilde ran the department during its busiest time, answered radio calls, and kept things moving, but he also made sure he did what was right for someone who couldn't speak for themselves. His advocacy went above and beyond the bedside; he worked diligently with law enforcement and the hospital's legal team to ensure justice and accountability on the patient's behalf.
He practiced relentless patient advocacy. Despite the chaos of the busy department, he remained steadfast in his commitment to protect the vulnerable patient and honor their wishes. He serves as an example of what is meant to be a nurse. I can only hope that if I were in this dire situation, I would be lucky enough to have a nurse like Hilde to make sure my voice was heard and my wishes were maintained. He truly deserves recognition through the DAISY Award.
