Through this entire period, Helen was a constant source of calm, compassion, and advocacy.
I arrived at the OCED with severe kidney pain and, during that visit, learned I had a volleyball-size tumor and additional tumors on my liver and elsewhere in my abdomen. I was transferred to TG for a biopsy so we could move forward with treatment.

From Sunday to Thursday, as my frustration and fear mounted, my surgeon ultimately decided to proceed with surgery on Thursday, to obtain the biopsies and ensure nothing more was present than the scans showed.

Through this entire period, Helen was a constant source of calm, compassion, and advocacy. She checked on me frequently, made sure I felt taken care of, and met me every time with a steadfastly positive attitude. She validated the shock of suddenly learning this news, acknowledged how painful and frustrating the delays were, and then did the most important thing – she advocated for my needs.

Whether giving me updates, clarifying next steps, or making sure my pain management and comfort were addressed, she treated me with dignity and respect every time she came into my room

Her actions exemplify MultiCare's values:

Respect: She embraced my worth, listening without judgment, and ensuring I felt heard and safe.

Integrity: She communicated honestly about what was happening, stayed by her word, and followed through on every concern I raised.

Stewardship: She thoughtfully managed time and resources, escalating appropriately so that delays didn’t compromise my comfort or care.

Excellence: Her clinical attention was meticulous; she anticipated needs and delivered consistently high-quality care.

Collaboration: She worked with my care team, helping keep everyone aligned on the plan for biopsy and pain control.

Kindness & Joy: In the hardest moments, she offered genuine warmth and small gestures that lifted my spirits and reminded me I wasn’t alone.

She also embodies the DAISY Award qualities MultiCare recognizes-delivering exceptional care, acting with compassion, inspiring trust and making a special connection, and serving as a true patient advocate who makes a significant, positive impact.

Her commitment and presence helped me endure a week of uncertainty and move forward toward answers and treatment.
