It was because of Heather’s attention to detail, respectful persistence, and trust in her nursing judgement that her patient’s infection was identified and they received the care they needed.
I would like to nominate my colleague Heather Richards for a DAISY Award for her exceptional advocacy on behalf of her patient. A patient under her care had been transferred to our unit for care after a kidney stone had been incidentally found on their imaging at another hospital campus. He originally had sought hospital care for neck pain radiating down his arm. Her patient went for surgery for his kidney stone and came back to our unit post op. Heather reported the patient’s primary complaint of neck pain to the provider before and after surgery, but no additional testing was ordered at that time. Heather did all she could to provide the patient comfort with the medications ordered and other interventions. When Heather came in for her shift the next day, she saw that this patient had a discharge order placed. Her patient had no improvement in his neck pain, so she again discussed the matter with the patient’s provider. She shared what she assessed objectively, what her patient shared with her, and urged his pain to be addressed further, prior to discharge. The provider agreed to order imaging for this patient, and they were found to have an infection in their spine, requiring weeks of IV antibiotic therapy through a PICC line. It was because of Heather’s attention to detail, respectful persistence, and trust in her nursing judgement that her patient’s infection was identified and they received the care they needed. Her advocacy truly made a difference for this patient, and for that, I believe she deserves recognition. Thank you, Heather!
