My wife and I had been through an emotional roller coaster, and Heather jumped right in to encourage us and our son.
Our 40-year-old son, T, walked into the ER at University Hospitals Conneaut in a very weakened state. His hemoglobin was 1.7and the staff didn't know how he was even standing. After blood work was done and testing, he was diagnosed with hairy-cell leukemia. As he had no transportation, his mother and I drove him to his appointments. He began his journey at UH Cleveland, where he had his chemotherapy treatment. We were terrified. He had a serious reaction to it. The next day, he began immunotherapy at UH Geneva. This is where we met nurse Heather Fults, who would be in charge of his infusion treatments. After his first 4 treatments, he became septic and had to be rushed to UH Cleveland for 3 days in ICU plus 7 more days. Afterwards, we picked him up and brought him home. We took him back to UH Geneva the day after that. He was in such a weakened state, Nurse Heather Fults immediately contacted the Cleveland doctors. She began saline solution IV to help him, and Cleveland doctors stopped certain medications. This brought him around. My wife and I had been through an emotional roller coaster, and Heather jumped right in to encourage us and our son. Over the next several weeks, our son's condition began to improve dramatically, from bed to be pushed into the room in a wheelchair to eventually walking to the infusion room. Heather tirelessly checked on our son and us and made all of us comfortable with liquids to drink and snacks to eat. All the questions we had, she answered. Any fears she quelled. Every visit from then on was a pleasant experience, and we actually looked forward to the visits as the news of his blood levels improved. This was a cause to celebrate with Heather. Our son completed his treatment and was joined by Heather and others for photos and for him to ring the "Bell." Heather Fults is an inspiration to us all and a blessing to University Hospitals Geneva!
