During a family weekend at the campground, my 61-year-old uncle suddenly experienced severe chest pain while playing horseshoes. After an urgent 911 call, he was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where he suffered a massive heart attack, which doctors called a "widow maker."

My uncle coded multiple times in the cath lab before being transferred to the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU). He was critically ill, on life support with multiple IV medication drips, ECMO, and an Impella device.

Throughout this terrifying ordeal, Heather was our guiding light. From the moment my uncle arrived in the CTICU until the day he turned the corner, this nurse's presence brought comfort and reassurance to our whole family. She was not only clinically exceptional but also incredibly compassionate.

Every time she performed a procedure or made a change in my uncle’s care, Heather explained each step in clear, calm language both to my uncle, even when he was sedated, and to our anxious family members. Her gentle voice, patience, and compassionate touch never went unnoticed.

She routinely checked on my aunt and cousins, answered all of their questions (no matter how many times they asked), and offered comfort during our most difficult moments. When my uncle’s breathing tube was finally removed and he became more alert, Heather made a point to speak directly to him, making sure he felt heard and respected, and ensuring all his needs were met.

What truly set her apart was the way they balanced their expert care for my uncle with their role as a mentor. I watched this nurse precept a new RN, taking extra time to teach and guide her through my uncle’s complex care. Heather's ability to be an advocate, educator, and compassionate caregiver simultaneously was truly remarkable.

She didn’t just care for my uncle; they cared for our whole family. Her kindness, dedication, and expertise made an immeasurable difference during one of the most frightening times in our lives.

I am deeply grateful for everything Heather did and wholeheartedly believe they are more than deserving of the DAISY Award.

Thank you, Heather, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
