May 2026 Honoree
Heather Cochran, BSN, CEN
It is my distinct honor to commend Heather Cochran. With over 28 years of experience in the Emergency Department, Heather is far more than a floor nurse and charge nurse; she is the steadying force in an almost impossible work environment. While her care for her patients is second to none, it is her advocacy for her fellow nurses that truly defines her leadership.
There is a collective sigh of relief when the staff sees Heather’s name on the schedule. We know that with her at the helm, the shift will be defined by fairness, integrity, and clinical excellence. In an environment that has seen significant leadership turnover and high stress, Heather remains a beacon of light. She leads with radical honesty and refuses to engage in unit politics, focusing instead on supporting her team so we can provide the best care possible to our patients. She has 28 years of clinical expertise, which makes her the person everyone trusts in the most complex trauma situations. Heather possesses a rare and lifesaving emotional intelligence.
Recently, I experienced a work-related situation that left me emotionally devastated. I reached a point of despair so deep that I felt I had nowhere left to turn. In my darkest moment, I remembered Heather. I knew she was the only person who would truly understand and listen without bias. Even though it was 9:00 pm and she was on her day off, Heather took my call. With her customary patience, kindness, and wisdom, she provided the lifeline I desperately needed. I have not told her this, but that night, Heather saved my life.
Heather is humble and unassuming; she does what she does because it is who she is, often without seeking a "thank you." She has spent nearly three decades inspiring other nurses to be better, kinder, and stronger. She is the heart of our ER, and I can think of no one more deserving of the DAISY Award than this incredible nurse.
