During an early-morning shift change, a veteran needed to be moved to a new room because of isolation precautions. He was visibly upset, saying no one was helping him and that he wanted to go home. The situation required patience, understanding, and a calm presence. Ms. Townsend stepped in immediately to assist with the transfer. As she helped the veteran settle into his new room, she spoke with him, listened to his concerns, and took time to understand what was causing his frustration. Through their conversation, she learned that he had previously been a pastor. With compassion and respect, she asked if he would like her to pray with him. He agreed, and Ms. Townsend bowed her head and offered a sincere, comforting prayer. This moment of connection made a profound difference. The veteran became calmer, more cooperative, and expressed genuine gratitude for the time and care she showed him. What makes Ms. Townsend's actions even more extraordinary is that she didn’t stop there. Later that day, she returned to check on the veteran, ensuring he still felt supported and cared for. Her follow-through demonstrated that her compassion was not a single interaction but a continued commitment to his well-being.

Ms. Townsend exemplifies the spirit of the DAISY Award. Her empathy, attentiveness, and willingness to care for the whole person emotionally, spiritually, and clinically made a lasting impact on this veteran. Her actions reflect the highest level of nursing excellence and compassion.

Thank you, Harritte, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
