She was very comforting to me and my family. It lifted our spirits to know that she was there because we felt like we had an advocate, and she would do whatever was necessary.
My 90-year-old dad was admitted to the hospital after a fall for what I expected to be a difficult recovery. I came to understand that it was much more serious and that this was the end of his life. All of the nurses, NPs, chaplains, and doctors were great, but Nurse Hannah (or, as my sister, who had been there the whole time, called her "Nurse Perfect") was exceptional. I feel like I should tell you a story about this one great thing she did, but it was more like she did everything to the best of her ability. She was very caring and attentive to my dad, treating him like he was HER family. She was very comforting to me and my family. It lifted our spirits to know that she was there because we felt like we had an advocate, and she would do whatever was necessary. It was a very confusing time. There was so much happening and changing and there were many critically important decisions to be made. Nurse Hannah was very patient in explaining what was going on in a way that we could understand. She is adept at telling you very hard things, things that you don't want to hear, but in a gentle way so you can take hearing them. She reassured us when we needed reassurance and kindly encouraged us when we needed to make a decision. She was supportive of our decisions about end of life care. She knew her hospital's policies, knew the resources available, and possessed the technical skill to do what needed to be done with the least amount of discomfort to my dad. I don't know how it's possible for her to be so invested, concerned and attentive to her patients. She informed us of the veteran ceremony and asked us to request it for my dad, a Navy veteran. We have a large family and all of us were impressed. I've spent a LOT of time in ERs and ICUs with family members, even just this year. I've never had a better experience than the Oschner ICU, and I've never met a nurse more capable, competent, and compassionate than Nurse Hannah.
