What stood out the most to me was the way she flawlessly balanced her professionalism and genuine kindness during a very vulnerable moment.
As a nurse, you never expect to see your mother in room eight of Tappahannock’s ED and be on the other side of things as a family member. When I walked into the ED that day, I was already expecting the worst, but Hannah met me at the door and held my hand on the way to see my mother. She was intubated and sedated after having a seizure, and even though Hannah knows me, she explained things in detail to let me know what was going on. Hannah’s shift had ended at the time I arrived at 7 p.m., and although she had worked through her twelve-hour shift, she did not leave until 8:30 p.m. Instead of leaving at her scheduled time and going home to be with her family, she stayed with me so that I was not alone. She frequently made comments such as “I am not leaving you,” “I will be right here,” “we are going to get her to VCU Main as quickly as possible,” and “I don’t want to leave you.” She was there to be a shoulder I frequently cried on. She worked tirelessly to ensure my mother was transferred to a higher level of care as quickly as possible. Hannah consistently advocated for my mother and me every step of the way and updated me frequently on any changes. She is the epitome of a nurse. Despite us working at the same hospital, she provided my mother and me with compassion, empathy, and attention that she would give to any patient. I can only imagine how stressful it is working in the emergency department and having a patient come in that you know and having to explain what is going on to someone you know. What stood out the most to me was the way she flawlessly balanced her professionalism and genuine kindness during a very vulnerable moment. I know in my heart that Hannah provides this type of care to all her patients, and she should be recognized for it.
