Hannah Smith
Heart N Hand Ministries would like to formally recognize and commend Hannah Smith for going far above and beyond her volunteer expectations while serving during the Heart N Hand Warming Shelter.
During her volunteer shift, a fellow volunteer experienced a sudden medical emergency and became unresponsive, with no detectable pulse or breath sounds identified by Hannah or on-site security. Without hesitation, Hannah immediately stepped into action, utilizing the critical skills she has developed through nursing school and her experience as a hospital code team member.
Hannah quickly and decisively moved the volunteer into position to begin life-saving measures. While doing so, she administered a forceful thump to the back, which successfully restored a weak pulse and spontaneous breathing. At the same time, Hannah ensured that emergency services were contacted, calling 911 and remaining engaged until first responders arrived and the volunteer was transported for further medical evaluation.
Hannah’s calm presence, decisive action, and advanced medical knowledge were instrumental in this emergency. Without her willingness to step in and act immediately, the outcome for the volunteer could have been very different. Because of Hannah’s actions, a life was saved.
