Being handed a blue baby is one of the worst experiences a nurse can experience. Especially when all the rooms are full and you consider that you may have to code them on top of the Braslow cart, in the hall, next to the code cart, with the mother looking on helplessly. Make you pucker. I had this happen recently, and thank goodness for Hannah Smith, who saw what was going on and reacted immediately. She had just discharged a patient and rapidly stripped and wiped the bed down, came over, scooped up the baby, and rushed it to her room. In the next few moments, she hooked the baby to the monitor and started an IV (in a baby that was a preemie and under a week old). The baby pinked up, and Hannah monitored it while preparing to transport it to a PICU. Thankfully, the baby did not arrest, but the threat was certainly there. Hannah did not hesitate to take over care, pop a line into a very small baby, and deliver excellent care to the baby and to the very new parents. Considering Hannah is a relatively new nurse, I think this is exceptional, certainly deserving of a DAISY.
