Hannah was my mother’s nurse on multiple occasions throughout her SICU stay and consistently delivered exceptional critical care. She played a pivotal role in solving the complex challenge of managing a new colostomy in a patient with compromised skin integrity and an open abdominal wound.

Although colostomy management may not traditionally be viewed as a critical care task, Hannah recognized the high risk for surgical site contamination and infection. She independently researched, consulted central supply, reviewed available products, and developed techniques to safely adhere skin barriers on fragile, compromised skin.

No one else in the hospital had the expertise to guide this process, requiring Hannah to think creatively and adaptively. Her determination and willingness to learn unfamiliar content prevented a potentially devastating infection, including the risk of sepsis. Her courage, persistence, and clinical insight had a direct and lasting impact on my mother’s recovery.
