I will never forget my encounter with Haley.
I am so happy to have this opportunity to nominate Haley for the DAISY Award. I was recently in the hospital for 10 days. All of the MCR nurses I encountered, including every charge nurse, accelerated in their unique ways, but Haley was, in my humble estimation, the cream of the crop of patient care nurses.
I was in after a diagnosis of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma and was facing a significant infection, which ultimately led to a Splenectomy, and the initiation of continuous IV antibiotic infusion therapy, which I would then continue at home after DC. To say I was overwhelmed emotionally and anxious would be an understatement. Then Haley became my nurse for several days, and I was so taken by her combined wisdom, experience, compassion, and concern. She is one of the best listeners I've ever encountered, nurse or otherwise. She sensed my fears and apprehensions and responded with more frequent visits. She checked on me more often than any other nurse I had, day or night. She was a pro at tender rapport building. She set me much more at ease, educated me on the care plan, disease management, and always had a tip or suggestion from her bag of tricks for addressing my concern of the day. Her medical prowess reflected the many years of experience she brings to her work.
And by the way, I never sensed a shred of burnout or impatience. She is a model of a high-performing nurse in terms of medical competence with a major slash of interpersonal effectiveness, kindness, and compassion. I will never forget my encounter with Haley.
