Haley is a wonderful nurse who has come and helped our unit in the past by answering our phones and door. While working last night, Haley called our unit asking if we have ink like we use for the infant footprints or a mold of some kind that she could borrow. We told Haley of course! She came to our unit to collect an ink foot-printer and some molding clay, and explained that her patient would be going on comfort care tomorrow and wanted to make something and get the patient's fingerprint. She wanted the patient's family to have something to hold onto, knowing tomorrow would be difficult and their loved one would be passing soon. This act of kindness and compassion goes above the requirements for patient care.

The patient was later transferred to the ICU.  Haley demonstrated extraordinary compassion, thoughtfulness, and dedication in preparing meaningful keepsakes for the patient’s large and grieving family. Haley had carefully printed several of the patient’s heart rhythm strips, rolled each one into a tube, and labeled them with the patient’s first name. She took the time to make a tube for each family member – a gesture that clearly came from the heart. When the family asked me for a copy of the patient’s heart rhythm, they were deeply moved to learn that Haley had already created these personal mementos for them. In addition, she made a thumbprint impression of the patient in clay – another deeply thoughtful gift. She also ensured that there were enough chairs in the room, anticipating the family’s needs and creating a space where they could gather together comfortably in such a difficult moment. The family was visibly emotional and grateful. They shared their appreciation with us, saying, “Y’all are so special.” Haley’s actions made a devastating day a little more bearable for the family. Her compassion, attention to detail, and selfless dedication exemplify the values of nursing excellence. She went above and beyond, and I truly believe she deserves to be honored with the DAISY Award.
