She has a genuinely excellent grasp of medicine and can instantly identify when patients are having problems with their treatment.
I am proud to nominate RN Hailey Jones for the DAISY Award. I have been a physician at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, for 35 years now and have worked with countless excellent nurses during my career. Hailey ranks right up there at the top. She first joined us in January of 2021, which just happened to be right before we started with MHS Genesis at the command. Hailey had prior experience with Cerner, and although she was a junior nurse at the time, she instantly became our Genesis expert, enabling us to continue delivering chemotherapy to our patients safely. She was also invaluable as we worked to improve the chemotherapy ordering system in the new EMR by helping to identify flaws in the system that could lead to errors. Over these past 4+ years, Hailey has become one of our best nurses ever. She has a genuinely excellent grasp of medicine and can instantly identify when patients are having problems with their treatment. Even more impressive, she typically proposes a solution to the problem and then discusses it with the providers. Usually, she is right on track, and we can follow her recommendations. On one occasion, a patient was having an unusual reaction to oxaliplatin. She found an article that described this reaction and the recommended solution – it worked! Her best quality, however, is her dedication and compassion to caring for her patients. Currently, I have a young patient with metastatic breast cancer who has needed frequent blood transfusions. Hailey has stayed late on multiple occasions, ensuring this patient receives the care she needs, frequently several times a week. This is not the only patient she has had a significant impact on, but it is a good recent example. Perhaps the best thing I can say about Hailey is that if my family members needed chemotherapy, I would want Hailey to be their nurse, as I know that they would receive the best possible care that could be provided.
