As difficult as the day was for all of us, Hailey did everything she could to make it easier for J and for us.
Our Aunt J was intubated and in a coma, and we decided to make the tough decision of removing her life support. Hailey was J's nurse on that day. We had dropped off J's rosary late the night before and when we called earlier that morning prior to our zoom call Hailey already made sure that J had her rosary in her hands. It was like Hailey knew how important that was for J and us.
When my husband called Hailey to make sure everything "was all set" she made my husband feel more at ease. And when the family zoom call started, Hailey got J all set up. Hailey very compassionately explained what we could expect. She explained it in simple non-scary terms. She asked us multiple times if we had any questions or needed anything. Hailey told us how J had her hair brushed and Hailey said they will "freshen" her up after the procedure. It touched my heart how she touched J's shoulders and stroked her hair as she talked to us. She took the time to make sure J was comfortable. Hailey was so kind to J!
After the procedure was complete, we came back on our zoom call and Hailey was right by J's side and stoking her hair. She spoke softly to J as she raised her to a sitting position. Hailey spoke to all of us with such compassion, and as she left the room she told us how sad she felt for us as we couldn't be there. She respected our privacy but told us she was there for us. She came in to check on J because she seemed uncomfortable, Hailey told us she would make J as comfortable as she could. Hailey gently put some Chapstick on J. She asked us about music and found what we needed to hear. Hailey came into the room just as J passed. Hailey again expressed her sympathy to all of us.
As difficult as the day was for all of us, Hailey did everything she could to make it easier for J and for us. My heart goes out to Hailey as I am sure like many of the health care providers, she is tired, stressed, and getting burnt out due to all what COVID has caused. And all the death that she must have experienced over these months. But Hailey was so very sweet, kind, and compassionate during our time with her. And she didn't treat J like "another one". Hailey is one special nurse! And we are all so grateful for the care and concern she provided J. Thank you!
