I visualized him making sure this patient was out of bed every shift he had her; her teeth were brushed after she ate her warm meals; he did her hair and made sure her room was kept nice and tidy. Now these tasks may seem like just nice gestures, but it was the way he did it-the little conversations, the laughs these two shared, the extra time he took to create the bond- that was so special to witness.
I would like to nominate Guy Witt, RN, for a DAISY Award after I personally witnessed him provide extraordinary care to a geriatric patient on our unit. Guy time and time again provides exceptional care to ALL of his patients, but the bond that developed between him and this patient was too special not to talk about. Guy takes his time to get to know his patients on a personal level- he learns what the patient values in everyday life and tried to mimic it in the hospital setting, which at times can be very hard to do but he always manages to do it.
Guy understood that the patient, prior to coming in, was mobile and would get up out of her bed every day; she valued her hair being kept, her food to be warm, her bed to be made with her favorite Notre Dame blanket, and her teeth to be brushed. This was a very scary visit for this patient as she was in her 90s and had a complicated stay leading her to go on Hospice. This, in turn, left her family very anxious, as they could not be at the bedside full time. Guy made sure what the patient had valued before getting sick and entering the hospital still happened.

This put her family at so much ease and built a special bond between the patient, her family, and him. He provided the patient's family with prompt updates and would always greet them when they came, and he even set time aside to talk to them in person and help escalate any concerns they may have had.
This patient's daughter is a Penn State Health employee, and she sent these kind words via email: "Good afternoon. Please take the time to recognize my appreciation for staff nurse Guy Witt. My Mom, was just discharged from 6 MIMCU. Guy was an exceptional nurse. He was always cheerful and provided her with excellent care. Honestly, I had to ask her initial nurses to get her out of bed and to be mindful of her skin integrity. That being said, it was the complete opposite with Guy. My entire family would like to express that his leadership team should be aware of his compassion and outstanding care of our Mother. This was a difficult admission, as she is transitioning to hospice, but Guy certainly made her feel well cared for and comfortable."
Guy treated this patient as if she were his own grandmother. He treats all his patients like family and gives them exceptional care- this is just one example of this. Guy created a very special connection with this patient and went beyond the call to the bedside. Therefore, I am asking for serious consideration for a DAISY Award for this exceptional nurse.
