Gus awes us all with his patient empathy and connectability through both verbal and non-verbal therapeutic communication. It is evident to all that he truly cares about the patient, even in simulation. It is truly incredible to see, and I learn ways I can improve every time I watch him.
August “Gus” Heckenbach is an exceptional student nurse! He is affectionately referred to as our “Cohort Dad” because he watches out for us all and is someone we all admire and aspire to be like; he also serves as our cohort’s liaison.

Gus is an excellent student. Regardless of life and school challenges, he always finds time to go above and beyond in his studies, earning high marks in all his classes. He is an example to us of doing the same.

Gus is a leader and advocate. He gives his time generously both in the Student Nursing Association and as our class liaison between members of our cohort and the staff. He is a safe, compassionate place for every member of our class to reach out and share concerns and challenges; he then demonstrates outstanding leadership in taking appropriate concerns to the staff. He works hard to resolve our issues, ensuring we all have the best learning experience possible.

Gus is a gift to our cohort and school. He truly is a friend to all and someone we what to be like “when we grow up.” He is truly the best of the best and will be a tremendous RN.

Gus is the unofficial cohort dad! He works tirelessly to advocate for our cohort as a board member. He listens to our concerns with open ears and no judgment. He brings us together with a calm demeanor and a father-like wisdom. Our cohort is stronger because of him, and I’m so grateful to be part of that.

He did a lot of things for this class. We all appreciate his help.
