In the early hours of the morning, at 1 am, my midwife broke my waters to induce my labour. Very quickly, it became clear that things weren’t going to be straightforward. With every contraction, my baby’s heart rate dropped, and I had to remain on continuous monitoring. A hormone drip was started to encourage stronger contractions, but again, my baby’s heart rate dipped with each surge.

The night the doctor and the nurse in charge came to review me several times, explaining that it was very likely I would need an emergency C-section, aware of my hopes to avoid this. By 7 am, the drip had to be turned off completely, and I was strongly advised to prepare for surgery. I signed the consent forms, knowing that the most important thing was to bring my baby into the world safely.

But then, everything shifted. Midwife Grace came on for the day shift and took over my care. She immediately listened to me and asked me about my wishes. I explained how deeply I wanted to avoid a C-section if it was still safe for my baby, and she didn’t dismiss me. Instead, she raised this with the nurse in charge, and together they sat with me for an honest, reassuring conversation. They explained everything clearly, made sure I understood the situation, and assured me that my baby was safe.

Grace then advocated for me, asking the consultant to review, advising on positions to make my baby happier, and getting fluids prescribed. From that moment, I felt truly supported and heard. Grace cared for me not just as a patient, but as a woman with hopes and dreams for my birth. She poured her heart into making sure I had the labour and delivery I had always imagined, while never compromising on safety.

Because of her compassion, her courage, and her dedication, I was able to have the birth I had hoped for. I will be forever grateful to Grace for standing beside me, believing in me, and helping me bring my baby into the world in the most empowering way. Thank you so much
