Had it not been for Gladys insisting on checking the foot and standing firm, Lord knows what could have come of that situation.
Gladys is one of the most caring nurses I've encountered on my journey here with Davita; she is always willing to help the patients in any way possible. She goes out of her way to make sure every patient feels special.
She builds great rapport with patients' caretakers, so she can be fully transparent when coordinating care and ensuring they follow up on all other doctor appointments and surgical visits they need to help them maintain the best possible life while on Dialysis.
One example of her love for the patients is that we have a patient who is diabetic and had sores on his leg and feet. This patient was very non-compliant with foot care and refused to allow Gladys to conduct foot checks (which she does when assessing patients). Gladys insisted on checking his feet that Monday morning, and when she did, she noticed that the toes on his right foot looked necrotic. She advised the patient that he needed to go directly to the hospital because the toes looked really bad.
He refused and told her, "No, I'm not going to the hospital!" Gladys used her better judgment and called the Paramedics. The patient ended up having a right, below-knee amputation, RBK d/t gangrene of the right foot 4th and 5th toes and progression of the infection to the 3rd toe and osteomyelitis. The patient's foot was in bad shape. Had it not been for Gladys insisting on checking the foot and standing firm, Lord knows what could have come of that situation.
